The Western States Trail Ride, popularly called the Tevis Cup Ride, is the oldest modern day endurance ride, having been held annually since 1955. As such, it has been the inspiration and model for the most challenging endurance rides worldwide. 30 minutes to Hope Valley in the high Sierra where you do not even need a trail to ride in any direction.  There is a string of 3 valleys (Hope, Faith, and Charity) for flat land scenic rides that really vary with the seasons. 10 miles across the valley are the Pine Nut Mountains – all open land, with a totally different eco-system from the Sierra (sage and Pine nuts)  (this is the natural heart of the source location for those little nuts  that add so much flavor to your salad or chicken dishes…  You can ride out and find the wild horses and run with them through the open country; it is thrilling!

It is still out there and marked all across Nevada and Utah, you can ride the original trail all the way to the Great Salt Lake without encountering a locked gate.  The original trail ran right in front of the villa, at the top of our private road at the base of the Sierra.  The ruins of the old way stations are about 20 miles apart as the trail snakes through the sage and aspen groves where the Paiute Indians used to try to ambush the riders, but Pony Express had the best horses money could buy and for the most part they just ran off and left the Indian ponies in their dust.
